National Guard & Reserve Eligibility
Guard and Reserve eligibility depends on the service component, order authority, purpose and duration of activation, or creditable years of service. VA reviews the records used for the COE.
Three service paths to compare
A drill calendar alone shows participation dates but does not establish the authority, purpose, continuity, or character of service VA needs. For example, monthly drills across a year do not by themselves prove a qualifying 90-day activation; the orders and official service record must identify the qualifying duty.
| Potential path | Threshold to document | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifying Title 10 | At least 90 days of qualifying non-training active-duty service | Orders and discharge or service records must establish qualifying federal duty |
| Qualifying National Guard Title 32 | At least 90 total days, including at least 30 consecutive days, under 32 U.S.C. 316, 502, 503, 504, or 505 | Not every Guard duty period is included; authority and dates matter |
| Six creditable years | Six creditable years in the National Guard or Selected Reserve plus a qualifying current, discharged, retired, or transferred status | Points and the service outcome must both be documented |
Documents by current status
VA's COE page lists different evidence by status. Submit all relevant periods when a career spans more than one component or type of duty.
| Status | Records to prepare |
|---|---|
| Activated service member or Veteran | Records for each relevant activated period. For qualifying Title 32 service, VA accepts a DD Form 214 showing activation under 32 U.S.C. 316, 502, 503, 504, or 505; an annual retirement-points statement; or DD Form 220 with accompanying orders |
| Currently serving, never activated | A current signed statement of service with the information VA requests |
| Discharged National Guard | NGB Form 22 for each period and NGB Form 23 or equivalent proof of creditable service and character |
| Discharged Reserve | Latest annual retirement-points statement and evidence of honorable service |
| Currently serving after activation | The qualifying Title 32 records above, or a current signed statement of service containing the information VA requests when applicable; VA may request additional evidence |
Request the determination
Organize the documents by service period and request a COE through VA or a participating lender. VA may request additional records. Meeting a summarized path does not promise an automatic COE or mortgage approval.
Not sure this applies to you?
We can help request your COE and review the result with you. VA may require supporting records, and timing varies by case.
